Republic F-47D-40-RE Thunderbolt

The constructor of this plane was Alexandеr Kartveli, and the carrier of the development was the American company "Republic". The first flight was performed on May 6, 1941, and serial production began the following year. The Thunderbolt is one of the most important fighter planes of the Second World War.

During and after the end of World War II, the Thunderbolt was in operational use in Allied air forces as well.
The P-47 is a robust aircraft with high flight autonomy, effective in combat in airspace and in action against ground targets. It had a significant role in escort and protection operations of flying fortresses, in their long-range missions. Over 15,000 Thunderbolt aircraft were produced in various variants. After the war, the P-47 aircraft was renamed the F-47.

It was introduced to the Air Force of Yugoslavia in the early 1950s, when about 150 aircraft of the F-47D variant were delivered as part of Western military aid after the political split with the Soviet Union.
They remained in operational use until the beginning of the sixties. The museum's Thunderbolt has been in the collection since 1986.
